Route 66. A visual tour. Page 4. Oklahoma

Over the boarder and into Oklahoma.

This is the section where so many people, displaced during the dust bowl years, and also the characters from the famous novel by John Steinbeck, Grapes of Wrath began their journey along Route 66.

Back to Kansas:
Back to Missouri:

Back to Illinois:
Back to Intro:

Commerce - Dairy King and Allan's Fillin' Station.

- Detour Option - Grove / Pioneer village for a Steamboat ride

Vinita

Foyil - Totem Pole Park
(I missed this... There was a sign, hand drawn as I went up the road, saying road closed.  I later figured it was probably some kids having fun.  Here's a link to what I sadly missed.)

Claremore - Cool Historic Downtown. But all I got was this controversial tourist shot.

Catoosa - Blue Whale

Tulsa - Cyrus Avery Bridge, where East meets West.
Blue Dome Gas Station.
Golden Driller
Buck Atom's
And if you missed the turn off like I did at County Line Rd, there's the Giant Liquid Life bottle to puzzle on.

Stroud - The legendary Rock Cafe
- Wall art.
- Another breakdown... Yep.  Gear shifter fell clean off as I put it into 2nd after taking the wall art picture.
- Friendly locals who help you with breakdowns... with a pet skunk?!  (Within about a minute and a half I had a motorcycle mechanic pull up and ask if he could help.  A few minutes later another couple on a bike pulled up to see what they could do to help.
Oklahoma has a bunch of great people living in it.  Despite what the media may try to tell you.  I'm sure they have their share of crazies too, but that's true anywhere.  But if this is any gauge - consider how long you'd wait if you had a breakdown where you live, before someone would offer help?

Arcadia - Round Barn
- Pops

To finally land in Jones to visit friends and get a shower.

Day 5. Chilled in Jones. Rode through a sweet lightening storm to get some new brake fluid for bleeding the lines.

Day 6. OKC to Amarillo Around 290 Miles

I stayed and had a fantastic all OKC brunch at Sunnyside Diner, courtesy of my generous friends, and enjoyed their company for maybe longer than I should've, though who can say.  It was a great time and totally worth it.

However, as a result I was again running a little behind again today.  Skipped a bunch of the sites, but that doesn't mean you need to.

 Edmond - Statue of Liberty
- Historic Hopewell Teepee Church - built from abandoned mine parts.

Yukon - Garth Brooks home town

El Reno - Historic Fort Reno
The famous Onion Burger at Robert's Grill

Hydro.  Nutopia?

Weatherford - Stafford Air and Space Museum

Clinton - Mowhawk Lodge (Closed for covid when I stopped by)

Elk City - There's a really big 66 sign at the National R66 museum, if you want to announce loudly to your social media friends what you're up to.
And a Giant Oil Derrick

Sayre - Courthouse used in the movie, Grapes of Wrath
- And quite the quaint little American downtown.

Erik - Sandhills curiosity shop

Texola - Random little Ghost town
